River T. Garza

Theme: Indigenous communities

Hello All My Relations is a mixed-media piece by artist River T. Garza in partnership with LA vs. Hate. The artwork addresses solidarity, love, and acceptance from an indigenous perspective, using graphic imagery, phrases, and traditional basket motifs. A visual element in the piece is a snippet from the Los Angeles County seal, featuring a Tongva woman holding a basket. The collaboration with LA vs. Hate is viewed as an essential step in enhancing the voice of Tongva individuals and promoting the narrative of what it means to be an Angeleno. Garza hopes the piece inspires viewers and fosters connections across different communities.

For our Orange County rendition of Be the Change, River T. Garza’s "Hello All My Relations" box will be paired with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), serving as the regional ambassador, and Arvida Book Co. as the host site.

Arvida Book Co. has dedicated its efforts to community engagement, embodying the ethos of many independent bookstores by amplifying diverse voices and narratives while fostering connections among people. Their commitment to building community aligns seamlessly with the message conveyed by Garza’s box: the power of unity in community building.

As the foremost anti-hate organization globally, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) was founded in 1913 with a timeless mission to "stop the defamation of the Jewish people and to secure justice and fair treatment to all." Today, ADL remains at the forefront of combating antisemitism and bias, utilizing innovation and partnerships to effect meaningful change. ADL's initiatives extend beyond its core mission to combat all forms of hatred and discrimination, advocating for justice and inclusivity in society.

River Garza’s poignant message of inclusion, unity, and healing resonates deeply with both the ADL's mission and the community-driven philosophy of Arvida Book Co. Through programming, advocacy, and support, ADL has stood as an ally, committing to "supporting North American Indigenous Peoples as a core part of our mission to secure justice and fair treatment for all." The partnership between Garza’s box, ADL, and Arvida Book Co. reflects a shared dedication to fostering a society built on mutual respect, understanding, and equity.
